Quality ways to spend time with your family

22/08/2017 online

When there’s just so much happening in our lives, spending time with the family can be tricky.

But quality time is more important than we may think.

A study by the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration found that designating time for a quick, fun family workout, is an efficient way to foster bonds and boost activity levels simultaneously.

Having fun and building connections all while keeping fit.

Here’s some family friendly ideas that won’t break the bank!

Garden games

Believe it or not, winter is one of the best times to head outside!

Why not get some chalk and draw a chalk ladder? You can do any number of hopping, sidestepping or skipping exercises which provide the perfect agility workout.  Even without the chalk you could set up your own agility course.

You could also play a game of freeze tag – where the person who gets ‘tagged’ has to freeze.

Don’t forget about the classic wheelbarrow races and hula-hoop contests – these ones will test your mental and physical strength.

Or just have a boogie! Who doesn’t love to dance along to their favourite songs? Dancing is always great fun and never feels like exercise.

Have a weekly sports night

It can be all too easy to get home from work and school and slouch out on the sofa in front of the TV.

But by scheduling exercise into your days, you’re more likely work out.

Why not set aside a Sunday afternoon for a family bike ride and pack a healthy picnic to enjoy?

A kick around in the park after school is also a great way for the family to work up an appetite before dinner.

Be flexible to moving it around to suit everyone’s needs, that way it won’t feel like a chore.

Get active at the Y

The YMCA’s recreation centres provide many classes which are fun for the whole family.

From Yoga and Zumba for mum and dad, to swimming and gymnastics for the kids, there’s something for everyone at the Y!
